Jake Shimabukuro

Saturday, July 21 at 8:00 p.m. – Bob Hope Theatre

Jake Shimabukuro can still vividly remember the first time he held a ukulele, at age four. It was an encounter that would shape his destiny and give the world one of the most exceptional and innovative uke players in the history of the instrument—an artist who has drawn comparisons to musical titans such as Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis.

Shimabukuro would end up performing on many of the world’s most renowned stages. Starting his career in Hawai’i, he took his inspiration from some of the islands’ great uke players—Eddie Kamae, Ohta-San and Peter Moon. But he quickly expanded his scope from there, drawing influences from across the musical spectrum.

As a member of the group Pure Heart, Shimabukuro became a local phenomenon. From Hawai’i, his fame next spread to Japan. He was signed to Epic Records (Sony/Japan) in 2001 as a solo artist. It was the start of what would become a deep catalog of solo albums, noted for their dazzling fretwork, ambitious repertoire and wistful melodicism. And in 2005, Shimabukuro became an international phenomenon when a video of him performing the George Harrison song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” went viral on YouTube.

Shimabukuro’s busy touring schedule—140 dates a year—is complemented by a rich and varied catalog of albums that capture the many moods of the uke. His most recent CD, Nashville Sessions, is one of his most adventurous, multifaceted and engaging records to date, blending elements of jazz virtuosity with heartfelt melodicism.

Banda MS

Friday, August 10 at 8:00 p.m. – Stockton Arena

There is perhaps no group that has been more successful at popularizing traditional, brass-based Mexican Banda music than Banda MS (short for Banda Sinaloense MS de Sergio Lizarraga). Banda MS’ concerts are known to feature rancheras (traditional Mexican songs performed with one guitar and one singer), but they also include Mexican pop and classic rock music. The band’s shows are loud, brassy and energetic. People buy tickets to Banda MS’ tour if they’re looking to have a good time. The group most recently released a 10th anniversary record, 10 Aniversario, celebrating the best music the band has released during the decade since their inception.

Banda MS is considered a regional Mexican band, and they were officially formed in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, in 2004. The group is a big one, comprised of over a dozen musicians, each of whom either sings or plays a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument. Banda MS’ most well-known members are singers Oswaldo Silvas and Alan Ramirez and tuba player Sergio Lizarraga. Though founded in 2004, Banda MS didn’t come out with their first full-length album – No Podras – until 2005. Their most successful album to date is En Preparacion, the group’s fifth full-length record, which was released in 2009. En Preparacion includes the band’s biggest hit, “Sin Evidencias,” which peaked at No. 5 on the U.S. Hot Latin Songs chart and No. 5 on the Regional Mexican Songs chart, and also brought acclaim to the group and Banda internationally. Banda MS’ worldwide popularity is due to the musical talent of its members and the band’s ability to contemporize traditional Mexican music.
