Stockton, Calif. – The Stockton Heat, proud AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Calgary Flames, announced today in conjunction with the office of Mayor Tubbs and Stockton Unified School District the Get in the Game – READ!, initiative, a collaborative effort to improve literacy throughout the region.
“Like Mayor Tubbs, who grew up in Stockton, we want to do our part to encourage local students to learn and engage in academics so they can help bring positive change to our community for years to come,” Heat CEO Brian Petrovek said. “We, along with the City of Stockton, Mayor Tubbs and Stockton Unified School District know just how important reading is for young minds and want to not only encourage and reward students for reading more, and learning to enjoy the benefits of reading, but to also start a fun competition among a group of five schools to see who can read the most books this season!”
The program is based on Stockton Heat hockey players reading to students twice a month during the upcoming Heat Hockey season beginning later this month through March 21. Every student that participates will be given free tickets to the Heat game on April 14th while parents will be offered tickets at a discounted rate and the school that ranks highest in the “Reading Face-Off” challenge will be honored at that game.
“Reading is important no matter what you want to do in life,” Mayor Tubbs said. “I see these students, and I remember being in their shoes. Lucky for me, I had adults around that inspired me to pick up a book and learn to love reading. That is the same hope that we want to inspire in these young kids today.”
“The Taft, Hamilton, Van Buren, Fremont-Lopez and Monroe Elementary School’s will be the five participating schools in the competition,” Superintendent Dan Wright said. “Each school will be scoring a goal for every book read by a second-grade student and the school with the most goals at the end of the program will be declared the winner. The scoreboard for the five schools will be kept on stocktonheat.com/read for the schools and students to keep track of their progress.”
