Colby Robak has never been to a symphony, but the 27-year–old defenseman for the Stockton Heat isn’t just going for the first time on Sunday, he’ll participate in the Stockton Symphony Holiday Pops.
The annual holiday show that brings together the symphony and the Stockton Chorale also will feature Robak reading “Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus.”
“I thought it was something cool, something I’ve never been a part of,” Robak said. “This is my eighth year of playing (professional) hockey. I’m from a small town and didn’t get to go to too many symphonies. This will be a first for me.”
Having Robak, who grew up in 700-person farming community of Gilbert Plains in Manitoba, Canada, recite the classic piece published in 1897 in the New York Sun in response to a little girl’s asking if there were a Santa Claus, was the brainchild of Heat CEO Brian Petrovek and Stockton Symphony Executive Director/CEO Don Nelson.
