In February 2019, the Heat celebrated the second Hockey is For Everyone month in Stockton, the international campaign that leverages the game of hockey to drive positive social change.
The NHL initiative partners with USA Hockey to spread the message of support to any teammate, coach or fan who brings heart, energy and passion to the rink. It’s also the belief that all hockey programs, from professionals to youth organizations, should provide a safe, positive and inclusive environment for players and families regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, disability, sexual orientation and socio-economic status.
During the first celebration of Hockey is For Everyone, we invited fans to attend a practice and learn and discuss some of the finer points of the game with CEO Brian Petrovek while also having launched Hockey Made Simple, an online and printed platform which introduces the basics of the sport and demonstrates key rules for a fan who’s brand new to the game in both English and in Spanish.
Printed handouts for new fans were made available for FREE at Heat home games through the rest of the season, which can be picked up at the Bruce’s Body Shop Sales and Service Booth in the North Entry, or can be viewed and downloaded on stocktonheat.com/simple.

It’s also important that all youth hockey players in the Central Valley and East Bay to appreciate and respect the importance of judging a teammate based on their talent, heart and work ethic, not any other factor.
During our appearances at local rinks in February, Heat players spoke to youth and sled hockey players about spreading respect to one another and how vital it is to keep racial and homophobic slurs out of vocabulary in the locker room and on the ice by asking them to take a stand with the You Can Play Project.
We and the You Can Play Project, need your help to spread our message of acceptance and respect! Ask your friends to watch the You Can Play videos and then to sign up to get involved with this important cause.

Team captains play an important role in driving opinion and educating teammates. Team captains serve as links between athletes and coaches, and often serve as the face of a team.
