Stockton, Calif. – The American Hockey League announced today that Stockton Heat forward Andrew Mangiapane has been named the CCM/AHL Player of the Month of October after recording 15 points in his first nine games, which leads the AHL.
Mangiapane, 21, has recorded at least a point in each of the nine-games the Heat played during October, recording five goals and 10 assists for 15 points to go with a plus-10 rating. His nine-game points streak is the longest in the AHL to start the season and is one-game away from tying Mark Jankowski’s Heat team record of 10-straight games with a point established during the 2016-17 season.
“He was consistent, and you can tell by his points,” Heat Head Coach Ryan Huska said. “Every night he was a factor in our scoring and helped generate and garner a little momentum for our group early on. I think the confidence he gained allows him to feel really good about where he’s at now. He’s been excellent for us and we’re looking for him to continue into November.”
Mangiapane sits on top of the entire AHL in points and shares the league lead in assists while ranking tied for second in plus/minus rating. His eight-game assist streak is also the longest in the American Hockey League this season and also puts him in sole possession of the longest such streak in Heat team history.
His 15-point month of October is third-best statistical month by a Heat skater, one point behind Jankowski’s 16-point month during 13 games played in March 2017 (9-7-16), and four points back of Derek Grant’s 19-point month of January during the 2015-16 season (10-9-19) that saw the centerman play in 10 of the Heat’s 11 games that month. Jankowski would be named the CCM/AHL Rookie of the Month for his 16-point month while Grant was named the CCM/AHL Player of the Month during his terrific month, making Mangiapane the third ever Heat player to be recognized for a monthly league award.
The Bolton, Ontario native was a sixth-round pick by the Calgary Flames in the 2015 NHL Draft and is coming off a rookie season in which he tallied 20 goals and 21 assists in 66 contests for Stockton. Mangiapaneplayed three seasons for Barrie in the Ontario Hockey League and was a Second Team OHL All-Star after notching 51 goals and 106 points in 2015-16.
He joins fellow October winners Mike Vecchione of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms who was named the CCM/AHL Rookie of the Month and Utica Comets goaltender Thatcher Demko, who was named the CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month.
