Stockton looks to earn a weekend split of divisional games following a Friday night setback to top-ranked Tucson as the Heat play host to seventh-place San Jose Saturdya night at Stockton Arena. The Heat took the win in the lone meeting between the clubs so far this season, earning a 3-2 shootout victory on home ice to start November. The Heat will look to build further on a strong start against teams not from Tucson, Stockton entering tonight’s contest an impressive 8-1-0-1 on the year against all non-Roadrunners opponents.
The Barracuda limp into Saturday’s showdown having lost five straight, four of which came in regulation, and the last a 9-3 defeat at the hands of the San Diego Gulls on Wednesday. San Jose has gotten off to a rough start to the year on the road, pulling into Stockton Arena at 1-4-0-1 on the year away from the SAP Center.
US VS. THEM
The Heat emerged victorious to start November in the only meeting between the clubs so far this season, Stockton clawing out two points in a game in which it never led until the final score. The Heat shined on special teams in the previous matchup, limiting San Jose to just 1-for-8 on the man-advantage while popping in two power play goals on five chances. Goals in the game came from Byron Froese, now tied for the team lead with eight on the year, and Ryan Lomberg.
The Heat have put their resilience on display this season, making a habit of answering losses with wins – or, at the very least, with points. The Heat have earned at least one point in the standings in four of five games following losses coming into tonight, winning three. After each of the previous two regulation losses prior to Friday’s setback against Tucson, the Heat responded with comfortable wins over San Diego – 5-1 on Oct. 18 and 6-3 on Monday.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Heat – Byron Froese
After netting his eighth goal of the season late in the second period on Friday, Froese is now tied for the team lead with fellow veteran forward Buddy Robinson. The captain has lit the lamp in four of the last six games, and he scored one of Stockton’s two regulation goals last time against the Barracuda. Following Heat losses this season, Froese has recorded three goals and an assist.
Barracuda – Jayden Halbgewachs
Halbgewachs recorded strong numbers against Stockton last year, finishing the season series with four goals and seven assists as well as six penalty minutes and a plus-five rating. He picked up this year where he left off, recording a goal last time the teams met. The forward has recorded only one point during the Barracuda’s four losses since the teams’ last meeting – an assist on Nov. 9 against Bakersfield – and could be due to make an impact on Saturday.
