Pelley Scores his First in Heat Loss
Stockton, Calif. – Stockton’s captain Rod Pelley scored his first goal for the Stockton Heat to open the scoring, but the Moose would once again down the Heat 4-1 thanks in part to 35-saves by Eric Comrie and a three-goal third period. Pelley’s shot just past the midway point in the contest snuck past the screened Comrie to put the home team up, but it would be Manitoba’s captain, Patrice Cormier who’d get one back for the Moose in the second period, tipping a shot past Gillies to draw the game even. In the third, the Moose capitalized on some defensive zone turnovers with goals from Jack Roslovic and Mike Sgarbossa, along with adding an empty netter, to give the Moose their second-straight 4-1 win over the Heat. Next up, the Heat head down south to take on the San Diego Gulls on Friday at 7:00 p.m. with the game streaming live on AHL Live. QUOTES
“The puck got back to me after I just came on from a change and [Tyler Wotherspoon] found me high and I was just trying to get it through. [Luke Gazdic] was in front and had a great screen and it found the back of the net, I don’t even know if the goalie saw it.” – Rod Pelley on his first goal with Stockton
“First and foremost you have to learn something from this game and learn that it is not good enough, but you have to have a quick memory because we play again on Friday against a good team in their building. Teams are ready for us, they come in here and work and we have some work to do. We need to re-focus as a group we can be better collectively top to bottom and that is something we have to do going into San Diego on Friday.” – Rod Pelley on tonight not being a good enough effort
“We got out worked and that is an easy fix in my opinion as a player. It is not structural, it’s mental and it’s competing and battling. From top to bottom we can be better at that.” – Pelley on the Heat not allowing opponents to outwork them
“We obviously wanted to come back tonight and get a win, but we have to clean up some areas in our game to make that happen. They are a strong, fast team. We have to learn from it and move on.” – Tyler Wotherspoon on failing to get revenge tonight
“Anytime you get a new face in here they want to contribute and Rod is a great leader off the ice as well as one the ice so it is always a nice achievement to get that one out of the way so we have to build off it and keep plugging away.” – Wotherspoon on Pelley’s first goal with the Heat
“We weren’t as engaged as we needed to be tonight and I thought they were the hungrier team right from the start of the game. I didn’t think our execution was great tonight I thought there was a little cheat on the part of our game and we have to make sure we do a better job making sure our group is prepared to play because I don’t feel like they were tonight.” – Coach Ryan Huska’s reaction to tonight’s loss
“The one thing we had a hard time tonight was there speed. They did a good job playing fast and their forwards were skating tonight, but I don’t feel we helped ourselves out tonight. We weren’t as sharp or vested in the game as we needed to be.” – Huska on Manitoba’s speed
